Guidance about being an independent contractor
You are responsible for your own taxes:
Unlike traditional W-2 employment, taxes are not automatically withheld from your hourly pay. You should plan to set aside a portion of your earnings (typically 15–25%) for federal and state tax obligations, and if you earn $600 or more you will receive a Form 1099-NEC from Mentor Collective at the end of the year (before January 30th of the following year). NOTE: If you earn below $600 during the year, you will not receive a Form 1099 - but not receiving a 1099 does not mean the income is tax-free. Under IRS rules, individuals must report all income earned from independent contracting on their tax returns, regardless of the amount or whether a tax form was issued.
Invoicing is required to receive payment: You will not be on an automated employee payroll system. To get paid, you must accurately track your hours and submit regular invoices. We recommend using the provided template.
